March is Women’s History Month, or as we like to call it here at BEAUTY BAY, the month of calling out your hype women and supporting the women around you, no matter what. This is the month to feel empowered, inspired, and be the hype woman you wish you had. It’s all about being a cheerleader for your girl gang and embracing all women.
To celebrate this iconic month, we’ve been chatting to inspirational women, from brand founders to activists, about what International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month means to them, how they use beauty to empower, and their biggest inspirations.
Read below for our interview with Millie Bobby Brown, founder of florence by mills.
What does beauty mean to you?
To me, beauty means, just being yourself and really representing your authentic self is so inspiring and beautiful to me.
Who is your biggest inspiration in the beauty industry?
Honestly, I’m inspired by everyone who posts a makeup look they’ve created or their natural selfies and skincare routines. Those are the people who inspire me in this business, I love to see what people are creating and what they want to see from the beauty industry, it’s so inspiring.
What beauty product makes you feel empowered?
I think there is no better feeling in a beauty routine than either a super hydrated, glowing, and fresh face, or a bold lip. Wearing a bold lip colour is like saying ‘I’m here and powerful!’
When do you feel the most empowered?
One of the easiest, everyday ways to get into an empowered headspace is when I’m driving, singing to my favourite songs at the top of my lungs. There’s nothing better!
As a brand founder, how do you want women to feel when they use florence by mills beauty products?
I want all women using florence by mills to feel empowered and just feel happy being themselves. I want them to embrace who they are and feel so good about what they are putting on their skin.
How to you think the beauty industry can grow to empower all women?
I really embrace showing more ‘real’ images of women in a natural state. I love a full glam look as much as the next person, but I also love those days where you’ve just done your full skincare routine and are fresh and glowing without an ounce of makeup on. I think showing more of those looks and normalizing things like discoloration, freckles, beauty marks, and even acne would empower not only women but everyone because no one is perfect.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given by another woman?
My mom has always been the one to tell me to ‘do what I love’. I really do carry that with me. I am an actor because I genuinely love it and I started florence by mills because I really love and care about what products I’m using, the ingredients and how they’re made and want to be able to share that with everyone.
What is the best piece of advice you could give to another woman?
I think the same advice I’ve been given, do what you love. Also, surround yourself with positive and loving people.
How will you be celebrating International Women’s Day?
I will celebrate International Women’s Day with maybe a little self-care moment and do a nice skincare routine. I’ll probably video call some of my friends and end the day with watching a movie with the amazing women in my family!
Who is your hype woman?
Honestly, myself. I think it is so important to learn how to hype yourself up instead of needing validation from other people. It’s taken a while and I’m still working on it, but I’ve learned to look at myself in the mirror when I’m feeling down and remind myself of everything I am. My family is also amazing, I feel my best when I’m around them because it’s just unconditional love.
