If anyone can come up with a better compliment than “you smell delicious”, we need to hear it. Nope? Us neither. Being the person that smells good and finding the fragrance that becomes your scent is quite literally what dreams are made. And quite frankly, we don’t want to see a day without it. But how can you make a perfume scent last longer so you carry on smelling golden all day?
From tricks to create perfumes that last all day, to where to put perfume, read on for our tried and tested tips on how to make scents last longer. “What’re you wearing?” interrogation pending.
The Best Ways to Make Perfume Last Longer
1. Moisturise before applying perfume
Did you know that if your skin’s dry, your fragrance will fade quicker? To avoid a short-term spritz, make sure your skin is hydrated before applying. This means slathering on the moisturiser and spraying on your favourite scent before it dries down. One of our fave combos is layering the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream with the SOL Cheirosa ‘62 Eau De Parfum or Brazilian Crush Cheirosa 62 Mist. to really lock that beach-day scent in. Another top tip: applying your fragrance whilst your skin is still slightly wet from the shower or bath can also make perfume last longer, too.
2. Keep your perfume cool
Storing your favourite fragrances in the best conditions is key to making scents last longer. It’s best to avoid harsh sunlight and warm, humid temperatures as they can alter ingredients and make your perfumes and body mists smell different. The best place to store your scents to make them last longer? A cool, dark place like a cupboard or drawer.
3. Layer different fragrances
One of the best answers to “how to apply perfume?” is layering your fragrances. As well as layering on top of moisturisers like we mentioned above, you can also spray your body mists and perfumes over scented body oils. It’s best to choose fragrances with similar or complementary notes to build a delicious mix of scents that fit perfectly together.
Try layering a moisturiser or body butter, body oil, and body mist together to make a scent last longer. We love layering the Sunday Rain Mango + Coconut Moisturising Body Butter, Mario Badescu Coconut Body Oil, and Sol de Janeiro Rio Radiance Perfume Mist to create a fruity blend.
How to Apply Perfume
1. Go for the pulse points
When it comes to where to put perfume, the warmest areas of your body are best as they project the scent. These areas are your pulse points – neck, wrists, inside the elbow. A couple of spritzes on these areas helps your perfume, fragrance, or body mist last longer and intensify it.
2. No rubbing, just let it dry
We’ve been guilty of this next one after many a spritz and spray, but rubbing your wrists together after applying your fragrance is actually a big no-no. This can shorten the longevity of your fragrance and cause the top notes to fade quicker. It’s best to spray, then let your fragrance sit and dry down to get the full experience from the top, mid, and dry notes of your scent.
3. No more “mist and walk”
The ‘spritz in the air and walk through’ is probably one of the first beauty hacks we heard of. But we’re super sad to say that it’s less of a hack, and more of a hindrance. Spraying your fragrance in the air means it can land on anything but you, like the floor, your clothes, and furniture, which it can actually stain and damage over time. A big ol’ waste, right? Your best bet is spraying your fragrance straight onto your body to make your scent last longer.
4. Spritzing your hair? Use alcohol-free fragrances
Is there much better than delish-smelling hair? It’s a “no.” Giving your locks a good spritz can make a scent last longer, but spraying fragrances in your locks can actually be drying for hair and damage strands if there’s alcohol added in there. So for your healthiest, best scented hair, make sure you choose a fragrance without alcohol.
