Summer has drawn to a close and autumn is officially settling in, and with the change of the season comes the need to draw fresh inspiration and new looks that flatter the seasonal changes. Waving goodbye to the sharp cut creases and heavy highlighting, as well as the sweltering heat that melted many of our looks away, the soft focus trend will transition us into autumn with a blurred and hazy effect.
As seen on the runway and in A/W beauty collections, the soft focus trend is all about a second-skin effect, blurred lines and a soft focus smoke on the eyes, cheeks, and lips. Taking inspiration from a lived in make-up look, the soft focus is modernised with neutral colour palettes, berry tones, and subtle highlight.
TAKE A LOOK
The eyes in this look are all about that ‘lived-in’ effect – use your eyeshadow brush or finger to diffuse colour over the lid softly and evenly. Work with neutral or berry tones to smoke out the eye for an ombre-effect finish. For the best results, work with soft and buttery eyeshadows that will melt into skin as you blend to deliver the blurred result that carries the look. To finish off the eye look, use a kohl liner to buff away gently at the waterline.
ON BOTH CHEEKS
For blush, you want to keep this as sheer as possible; that means working with your fingers to blend in the shade. Opt for a natural flush colour and work with nudes and peaches really will hold the look together.
SHOW ME THE GLOW
In contrast to summer’s trend for a strobe effect – this is where we tone down the amount of highlight, opting for a sheer and natural highlight. Use a fan brush to lightly dust glow onto the high points of the face.
BUTTER ME UP
Avoid bold and pigmented lip colour choices and stick to more natural and muted colours, in sheer, creamy formulas to create the effect of natural, just-bitten lips.
