Tips For Beautifully Smelling Hair

Have you ever found yourself down the haircare aisle grappling with a million products wondering which one is finally going to make your hair smell like a dream? Us too! But thankfully we’ve found the products that not only smell good but will give your hair the TLC it’s been wanting.

Haircare is very personal and how you treat your hair will often depend on your hair type. Take  you fine haired girlies, your hair retains more oils so washing your hair will be more frequent. Your lifestyle can also have an impact on maintaining that “fresh out the shower” scent because sweat build-up can also affect the hair’s smell and not everyone has the time for a daily haircare routine after the gym.

But don’t let those busy schedules stop you from having the best smelling hair, you deserve the compliments too! From hair masks and mists to fragrant shampoos and oils we’ve gathered our top tips for keeping your hair smelling beautiful and fresh all day long.

5 Top Tips to Make Your Hair Smell Good

1. Nail that hair wash routine

Our first tip is to find out what hair type you have, as the better you know your hair the better it will smell. For instance, don’t leave your hair without a wash for long periods of time as you want to prevent your hair from drying out and breakages occuring. Also, not washing your hair can lead to a build up of dandruff which causes the scalp to become irritated and let’s be honest, no one wants to deal with that.

What you may also want to add into your hair wash routine (perhaps during your mid shower concert) is cleaning behind your ears and the nape of your neck as these are areas that are often forgotten and can retain smell.

The type of shampoo you use is also important to consider when wanting to make your hair smell good, especially if you want to take extra care of your scalp as different shampoos have different qualities and benefits for your hair. For instance, clarifying shampoo prevents product build up, whereas sulphate-free shampoo aims to nourish and will protect the hair’s natural oils.

Cleansing your hair is one of the most important steps so make sure you love your shampoo because it’s your best friend when it comes to haircare and most importantly it makes your hair smell amazing.

2. Use Hair Mists and Perfumes

You may think that hair mists and perfumes are a luxury you cannot afford, however this is a big misconception as it is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to keep your hair smelling great. It’s also a product you can easily throw into your daily routine and with their convenient size it can be popped into your everyday bag for whenever the time for a spritz may arise. Not only that but scents can stick to hair for long periods of time, so having a hair mist or perfume in your back pocket will really change the game.

Take the Sol de Janerio Rio Radiance Perfume mist which is infused with top notes of leite de coco and dry notes of vanilla and amber. We are No.1 fans of this product as not only does it transport you back to sitting on the beach in the sun, but it leaves your hair smelling like you never left the tropical paradise. It’s the perfect hair fragrance if you want something to smell good and also leave your hair glowing.

3. Spray dry shampoo

You may already know and use this next tip, as we have all succumbed to masking our three-day hair with dry shampoo (sorry not sorry). But using dry shampoo is an effortless way to keep your hair smelling fresh for longer and giving your roots that much-needed volume.

Most dry shampoo contains starch, which is an ingredient known for its absorbent properties.  With this it settles the oils on the scalp and masks the odour that may appear in your hair. Dry shampoo also has added scents to them so not only are your oily roots taken care of but your hair smells like you’re fresh out the shower.

You’ll most likely use dry shampoo the day before you wash your hair, but some do like to use it for added volume so it can be up to you and your hair to decide. To apply you should spray the product 12 inches away from the root of your hair and spitz in any areas you think are looking a little past their best, so you’re left with bouncy and beautifully-smelling locks.

One thing to remember though is that dry shampoo doesn’t clean your hair, so don’t see it as an alternative to washing. It will provide your hair with a fresh and clean aroma for a period, but to attain those much wanted compliments your hair will still want and need your loving hair wash routine.

4. Apply Hair masks

Hair masks are quickly becoming the best way to give your hair the salon shine you’ve been missing without having to fork out the funds. They aim to strengthen, repair and nourish the hair by giving it the boost of moisture it desires, and with the main components being shea butter, aloe vera, and argan oil, it’s no wonder they’re a much loved product.

But what we love most about hair masks are the smell, with a variety of scents being available your hair can smell calm and coconutty on Monday and fruity and fun on Friday. For instance, our Coco & Eve Like A Virgin Nourishing Coconut & Fig Hair Masque is THE hair mask to give you the best smelling hair. Who doesn’t want their hair to smell like an island paradise? It also does what it says on the tin and revitalises your hair to appear as if it’s been touched for the very first time.

To achieve this fabulous smelling and stronger looking hair you should add a hair mask into your hair wash routine perhaps once a week. After washing out your shampoo you should comb a dollop of the product from the middle to the ends of your hair and let it sit and work its magic for around 3 minutes before rinsing. You should then continue with your hair wash routine by using your conditioner so all that moisture goodness stays in the hair and looks silky soft.

5. Reach for hair oil and leave-in conditioner

These two products are two of the best yet simple ways to get your hair smelling amazing as soon as you get out of the shower. You should apply hair oil or leave-in conditioner to the ends of your damp hair, then blow dry or let your hair dry naturally to achieve fresh smelling and shiny hair.

Again both of these products are also known for their moisturising qualities so your hair will smell incredible and also gain that natural looking shine it’s been dying to get back. We love Mielle Organics pomegranate & Honey Leave-In Conditioner, it’s perfect for those with dry, curly hair who want a lightweight conditioner that leaves the hair looking frizz- free, detangled, and smelling phenomenal.

Now you know what it takes to have beautifully smelling hair you can go forth and pick your faves and you can thank us later for all the compliments you shall receive.
